I never really liked watches in general. I have never been a fan of bracelets and I lived for the times I ripped the paper admission wristbands off after the club. I liked the freedom of having a free wrist without anything holding me back; with free wrists I can do anything. So why did I spend $500 on the Apple Watch?
I recently had the opportunity to check out the Apple Watch at the Apple Store and holy fuck, it’s nice.
There are 3 things that really stood out to me that made me change my mind about the Apple Watch and smartwatches in general.
1. Style
Smartwatches have been around for a while, but every time I saw an article about one, they always looked clunky, heavy and simply, unappealing.
The Apple Watch not only is lightweight (insert weight) it looks light-years better then smartwatches that I’ve seen in the past.
It is touch screen, has a crown on the side allowing me to scroll in and out of apps easily and with the option of changing the band, I can easily switch up the entire look of the watch in a matter of seconds.
At a quick glance, you couldn’t even tell it’s a smartwatch. The fact that it is so powerful and still fits into my everyday style is probably the biggest win for me.
I’m buying the Apple Watch because it fits my style.
2. Functionality
There are a lot of smartwatches in the market today. As I review the specs and functionality of other watches in the market, I see that the Apple Watch clearly wins.
The robust app store that Apple has created to easily allow app developers to create and upload apps is something that, to me, puts Apple watch above all other watches.
Yes, the Android and Pebble Smartwatches have their own app stores, but because of the Apple Watches functionality, the apps are a lot more user friendly, functional and overall just better.
For example, a few things that come standard are Passbook, Workouts, Weather, Maps, Calendar, Alarms, Stocks, and a remote app all pre-installed when I buy the watch. I don’t have to search and download all of these standard apps unlike other smart-watches. It just works.
Oh, it also allows me to take and receive calls. No big deal or anything.
The use of NFC, (Near-field communication) broadens the functionality as well- something exclusive to only the Apple Watch at the moment. The fact that I can just put my wrist to a machine and pay for my latte is still amazing to me. I don’t think I’m ready.
I’m buying the Apple Watch because of the wide functionality that it provides.
3. Connectivity
After I got swept into the smartwatch craze, one of the first things I considered was deciding what watch was compatible with my phone, the iPhone 6. I saw that very few smartwatches were compatible with the iPhone.
I have a MacBook Pro, an iPad and an iPhone. If I am to get a watch, the obvious choice would be to get the Apple Watch, right? But that alone should not subject me to spending $500 on a smartwatch.
When I take a photo on my phone, it is automatically saved to my iCloud account and is easily accessible on all of my devices, instantaneously. My apps, music, videos and documents all sync perfectly in my iCloud account.
I know that with the addition of the Apple Watch to the Apple product line, I know the integration will be seamless and fit right into the existing platform. This will allow me to jump right into enjoying the watch and less time syncing and getting accustomed to a new platform.
I am buying the Apple watch for the ease of synchronization with my existing devices.
I’m sure for every reason to buy the Apple Watch, there are three reasons not to. It is a fairly expensive investment and it’s in a rising industry. But from what I’ve seen, it’s fucking sweet. If I have the ability to talk to my friends from my watch, pay for groceries with a swipe of the wrist and get notifications from my social media accounts on my wrist, why would I not?!
Apple got the Apple Watch right. It fits my style perfectly, it has a lot of functionality that is only expanding very quickly and will sync easily with my current devices.
I guess the worst part about buying the Apple Watch is having to wait almost a month to actually receive it in the mail.
